We dance, we teach, we celebrate
OUR STORY
THE FOUNDERS
Established by Shob and Andy in 2022, The Night Owls teach blues and swing dancing, organise social dances and celebrate the rich history and culture of blues and jazz.
THE ROOTS
We acknowledge that we participate as guests in this living culture of music and dance which was created by African American communities. These art forms represent a triumph of human spirit, courage, creativity and resilience and we dance every step with gratitude and humility to the originators and hope to honour their legacy.
THE COMMUNITY
At the heart of our vision is to build a dance community which is inclusive, inspiring and gives opportunity for every level of dancer… we can’t wait for you to join us!

OUR DANCE TEACHERS
SHOB Nambiar
She has been invited to teach at prestigious festivals around Australia, NZ, New Caledonia and in Europe. She has had competition success, winning multiple national titles in lindy hop, blues and balboa and also twice winning the Solo Blues competition at the renowned Studio Hop Summer Camp in France.
Shob has the privilege of training and performing with amazingly talented friends as part of Melbourne’s premiere lindy hop troupe The Rhythm Revellers. However her biggest joy is watching student’s eyes light up when they too discover the amazing joy and freedom of partnered jazz dancing as well as the confidence to improvise and move in an authentic way. She has been at the helm of some of Melbourne’s biggest swing dancing venues and is now the co-director of her own school… The Night Owls.
ANDY Fodor
He is a loved social dancer on every dance floor he enters, known for his incredible ability to connect with partners across all experience levels and styles.
He has had great success on the competition floor and is a proud founding member of The Rhythm Revellers lindy hop troupe in Melbourne. He has taught workshops all over Australia, NZ, New Caledonia and Europe.
His latest project, the blues and swing dance school The Night Owls has created a vibrant and passionate community in Melbourne. He can't wait to share his love for both blues and lindy with you.
STEPH Ashby
She found her way back to dance through a swing dancing class in 2015 and hasn’t stopped dancing since.
As a teacher, she is always eager to share her love of swing dancing, bringing a fun and positive energy to all her classes.
She is passionate about the joy and creativity that swing dancing brings, and loves seeing her students learn to be playful with the music and each other.
JOEL Kohn
Nearly fifteen years later, he’s still dancing the lindy hop and continues to share his passion for the dance and its history in his classes.
Joel has more than ten years experience as an instructor, teaching regular classes in Melbourne and workshops at interstate and international events. He has proudly taken home awards from a host of dance competitions (including the title of Hellzapoppin’ champion with partner Loz Yee in 2015).
He is a member of premiere jazz dance troupe, the Rhythm Revellers.
